IGCSE

Thoughts about the future often begin with a meaningful choice. Last week, the Senior School hosted the 2025 IGCSE Option Fair. Parents and pupils gathered on campus, stepping into this all-encompassing academic forum with anticipation and curiosity about the next stage of the learning journey. From insightful conversations at the subject booths, to thoughtful reflections during the presentations, each moment was a preview of the journey ahead and a real-life rehearsal in how to choose their own path.
IGCSE
The IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), is an internationally respected academic programme developed by the University of Cambridge. Globally recognised, it serves as a crucial bridge towards A-Levels and future university studies. Choosing the right IGCSE subjects not only lays a strong academic foundation but also helps to cultivate forward-looking habits essential for success in an ever-changing world.
At the fair, Heads of Department and subject teachers were on hand to offer in-depth insights into each discipline. Key topics included thestrengths of the subject, curriculum structure, assessment methods, and how each course aligns with potential university pathways. Subjects on offer included Mathematics, Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), English, Humanities and History, Business, Economics, Computer Science, Chinese, Art, Music, Drama, PE, and University Guidance & Careers.
In addition to the in-depth academic presentations, MCC alumnus Bill Yang, a graduate of Imperial College London with a master’s in computer science & artificial intelligence joined us to share his personal university journey. The U&G team also highlighted the close connection between subject choices and future university aspirations, encouraging families to seek a balance between interest, ability, and long-term aspirations.
Each subject had its own dedicated booth, where parents and pupils engaged in one-on-one conversations with Heads of Department and teaching staff. The atmosphere was lively and inquisitive, with engaging discussions about academic challenges, study strategies, and university planning. These interactions provided families with valuable insights, into the most suitable learning pace and direction for the pupils' academic growth.
As Mr Michael Urquhart, Headmaster, Malvern College Chengdu, aptly noted: "The IGCSE stage marks the true beginning of students 'learning for themselves'. It is here that they begin to make informed choices, to think independently, and to take the first steps in crafting their personal roadmap for life. Teachers are not merely conveyors of knowledge but companions who walk alongside pupils on their journey of growth. At this fair, we witnessed many pupils growing in clarity and confidence and heard families voicing ever-clearer visions for the future of their child’s education. This was the very purpose and value of holding this event."
