Some people argue that enhancing people’s standard of living should always take precedence over safeguarding wild animals and birds. However, I strongly disagree with the notion that raising living standards should invariably take priority over protecting wildlife.

Firstly, wildlife conservation is indispensable for sustaining human life and prosperity. Many improvements in living standards – from food security to public health – depend on healthy ecosystems that wild species help maintain. For example, wild bees and birds pollinate crops, and forests and wetlands purify water and air. Furthermore, the United Nations warns that biodiversity loss will undermine efforts to reduce poverty and hunger worldwide, showing that sacrificing wildlife for short-term gains can backfire. Thus, far from being a secondary concern, preserving wild creatures is fundamental to sustainable progress.

Secondly, protecting wildlife often directly benefits people, so it can go hand in hand with raising living standards. For instance, ecotourism centred on wild animals generates jobs and income for local communities. Moreover, conservation programmes can improve livelihoods by sustaining natural resources – WWF reports that its wildlife projects have boosted food security, fresh water access and incomes in many communities. This shows that humanity need not choose between development and conservation, because the two can reinforce one another.

Admittedly, improving living standards is a critical goal. In many developing regions, people suffer from poverty and a lack of basic necessities, so governments and communities prioritise economic growth and infrastructure to alleviate human hardship. From this perspective, conservation might seem less urgent than job creation, education or healthcare. However, assuming that human welfare must always come at the cost of wildlife is short-sighted. Environmental destruction from unchecked development ultimately hurts people, leading to problems like climate change and resource scarcity. Furthermore, once species disappear, the loss is irreversible, depriving future generations of natural heritage and potential scientific advances. Therefore, even as we strive to improve human lives, it is crucial not to do so by sacrificing wildlife.

In conclusion, I do not agree that raising people’s living standards is always more important than protecting wild animals and birds. A sustainable future depends on treating human welfare and wildlife preservation as equally vital, since long-term human progress is inseparable from the well-being of the natural world.
