PhD position in the Plant Adaptation Lab at EPFL

EPFL | Plant Adaptation Lab

APPLICATION DEADLINE:招满即止

Mission

The newly established Plant Adaptation Lab (PAL) is looking for a motivated student to work on a Swiss National Science Foundation funded project on plant adaptation to salinity stress

About the Plant Adaptation Laboratory (PAL)The PAL focuses on mineral nutrition and stress adaptation in plants. Saline soil is an important agronomic problem. While it is widely acknowledged that salinity is a critical factor that limits plant growth and crop productivity worldwide, there are serious gaps in our understanding of how sodium toxicity plays out at the cellular level, and the mechanisms plants employ to tolerate salinity.

Profile

  • Master’s in biology or related disciplines, preferably plants
  • Experience with molecular biology and cloning techniques
  • Strong interest in optical and cryo imaging techniques
  • Basic knowledge or experience with coding, data analysis and biostatistics
  • Excellent oral and written English skills.

Tasks and responsibilities

At PAL, we want to understand how plants cope and adapt to salinity across biological scales, particularly the subcellular coping strategies. Towards this, the student will conduct research on genetic model Arabidopsis and `wild` halophytes (naturally salt-tolerant species) to determine what makes halophytes better at dealing with salinity.

He.she will have the opportunity to drive the project using a range of genetics, micro- and nano-scale analytical, and live-imaging techniques.

We offer

  • Opportunity to work on multidisciplinary and cutting-edge projects using different imaging techniques, including the unique CryoNanoSIMS ion probe
  • Opportunity to access state-of-the-art research facilities and laboratory resources
  • A competitive Swiss PhD student salary.

Application informations

  • Important note: The chosen candidate will have to be accepted into the Doctoral School at EPFL before the work-contract can start
  • Your application should include: 1. Motivation letter; 2. Full CV and transcript of records (Bachelor and Master); 3. Contact information of at least 3 people who can provide a letter of reference
  • Please submit your application as a single document

PhD position on energy transfers across scales in convective storms

University of Cologne | Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Institute for Geophysics and Meteorology

APPLICATION DEADLINE: 30 Sep 2025,

We are one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe and one of the most important employers in our region. Our broad range of subjects, the dynamic development of our main research areas and our central location in Cologne make us attractive for students and researchers from around the world. We offer a wide range of career opportunities in science, technology, and administration.

The position is based at the Institute for Geophysics and Meteorology and focuses on diagnosing energy transfers across spatial scales in convective systems. The goal is better understand thereby is to better understand the physical mechanisms that drive storm development and intensification.

YOUR TASKS

  • Conduct high-resolution high-resolution numerical simulations of convective storms
  • Apply energy transfer diagnostics to the simulation outputs
  • Characterize the vertical and horizontal redistribution of energy within the planetary boundary layer throughout the life cycle of convective storms
  • Investigate the spatial organization and temporal evolution of inertial (mechanical) and diabatic (thermodynamical) energy transfers, especially in relation to changes in the dynamic environment or variation in storm intensity changes
  • Identify early indicators of storm intensification
  • Contribute to teaching activities
  • Present results at conferences and publish in scientific journals

YOUR PROFILE

  • M.Sc. in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field
  • Experience in atmospheric modelling or atmospheric data .analysis; knowledge of boundary-layer meteorology or atmospheric convection is an advantage Proficiency in scientific programming (eg. Python, Fortran/C++, HPC)
  • Experience with ICON simulations or Large Eddy Simulations is desirable but not mandatory
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English

WE OFFER

  • The opportunity to be part of a dynamic research institute with strong international collaborations focused on studying extreme storms
  • A diverse working environment with equal opportunities
  • Support in balancing work and family life
  • Flexible working time models
  • Extensive advanced training opportunities
  • Occupational health management offers
  • Opportunity to work remotely

The University of Cologne promotes equal opportunities and diversity. Women will be considered preferentially in accordance with the Equal Opportunities Act of North Rhine-Westphalia (Landesgleichstellungsgesetz – LGG NRW). We also expressly welcome applications from all suitable candidates regardless of their gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity.
