Elaina

Dora
(Dora
Licca

Elaina
(Elaina
Licca
Elaina
(Elaina
Dora
Dora)
Licca

Elaina
Dora
Elaina
Dora
Licca

Q1.What makes your university unique, and how has your experience been so far?
Elaina
I lovethe small-class teaching model at liberal arts colleges. It allows every student to receive personal attention and mentorship from professors. Weeklyin-depth conversationshave expanded my academic horizons and given me valuable advice on majors and career paths. The fast-paced environment can be challenging, though—balancing academics, social life, and restis a constant learning process.
(Elaina’s Study and Life at Swarthmore)
Dora
At Berkeley, the diverse courses and vibrant campus culturehelped me adapt quickly and find like-minded peers. The large campus feels likea micro-society, preparing me for the pace of life beyond university and teaching me to work with people from different backgrounds. Seeing my peers’ clarity of vision and relentless drive inspires me to push forward.

Licca
My school isin New York City, which has become my “open-air classroom.” From museums to Central Park, the city’s rich cultural mix constantly inspires my creative work. Here, learning happens not just in the classroom, but in every corner of the city.

Q2.What skills are essential for studying abroad?
Elaina
Self-awarenessis key—knowing who you are and what you want. In high school, goals were more straightforward; in the freer, less structured environment overseas, you need tocreate your own framework and stay focusedso you don’t lose your way.
(Elaina's Overseas Life)
Licca
Independent living skillsare crucial. Living alone means quickly learning essentials like cooking and cleaning, and taking responsibility for your own safety and health. It’s also aperiod of rapid personal growth—solitude gives you time to think and understand yourself better.
Q3.How did Dehong prepare you for overseas study and life?
Elaina
Swarthmore’s classes feel familiar becauseDehong also emphasized small-group discussions. Those classes honed mycommunication and critical thinking skills, making me confident in expressing my ideas. The IB program’sextensive essay-writingalso prepared me to meet university-level writing requirements with ease.
(Elaina Studies and Participates in Art Activities at Dehong)
Dora
Dehong’sbroad curriculum—from humanities to STEAM—sparked my curiosity across disciplines andfostered an open learning mindset. This gave me the courage to try new subjects at university, enriching my academic journey.
(Dora in Dehong’s Inquiry-based Class)
Licca
At Dehong, we often communicated with teachers via email, whichtrained me to write clear, professional, and polite messages—a vital skill in American universities, where email is essential for solving problems and making requests.
(Licca Exhibited Her Works at Dehong IB Visual Art Exhibition)
Q4.What do you aspire to be?
Elaina
I want to follow my heart andlive healthily and happily. Career-wise, I aim to becomeaproduct manager in the tech industry—especially in the field where technology meets education. Because this is not only very attractive to me, but also has great social significance.
Dora
I want tokeep exploring. My current goal is towork in investment banking, using it as a platform to learn about different industries before deciding where I want to specialize.
Q5.Any tips for younger Dehong students about university applications?
Elaina
Try and explore different disciplines more often, make a decision after experiencing them. This has been of great help to me in choosing my major and career direction. My advice:play to your strengths. If something takes you 120% effort to match what others achieve with 80%, it might not be the right fit.
Dora
Learn to relax during application season. Life has a high margin for error—don’t over-stress about the unknown. Staying calm often leads to better outcomes.
Licca
Your view of the world depends on your perspective.Keep giving yourself positive affirmationsand believe everything happens for the best.Stay optimisticthrough challenges, and trust yourself to overcome them.
