It is argued that news coverage should prioritize positive stories. While I acknowledge the value of such news, I also believe this tendency could undermine the role of the media in keeping people informed and may result in negative consequences.
It is true that a stronger focus on positive news stories can yield psychological and social benefits. People tend to feel more inspired and hopeful when they read about kindness, innovation, or social progress. For example, stories about young entrepreneurs can motivate teenagers to pursue meaningful goals and contribute to their communities. Moreover, regular updates on breakthroughs in science or global cooperation can strengthen public morale and reassure people that society is making steady progress, leading to a greater sense of hope and confidence in the future. By contrast, constant exposure to negative news about natural disasters, or war may create panic and anxiety in the society.
However,it would be misguided to impose restrictions on the coverage of tragic news events. Serious crime and natural disasters, for example, may dishearten audiences, but they are an unfortunate reality of the world today. The public need to stay informed about these events to have a clear understanding of contemporary issues and to be adequately prepared for potential challenges in the future. Furthermore, if the media were to focus predominantly on positive news, it could result in financial losses, since reports on tragedies, problems, or sensational stories generally attract more viewers and readers compared to articles featuring only good news.
In conclusion, while positive news can boost morale and inspire hope, it is important that the media continues to report on negative events as well. A balanced approach ensures people stay well-informed about reality, while also maintaining optimism for the future.
