The media should include more stories which report good news. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

In today’s information-saturated world, news outlets play a crucial role in shaping public perceptions and emotional responses. Some argue that the media should place greater emphasis on broadcasting positive stories. I fully agree with this view, as such a shift could benefit both individuals and society as a whole.

Firstly, regular exposure to good news has the potential to enhance public mental health. In recent years, studies have linked excessive consumption of negative news to heightened anxiety, stress, and even depression. When people are constantly bombarded with reports of violence, disaster, and conflict, it can foster a sense of helplessness and fear. Conversely, uplifting stories - such as acts of kindness, community achievements, or scientific breakthroughs - can inspire hope and resilience. Thus, including more positive coverage can act as a psychological counterbalance to the pessimism often promoted by mainstream reporting.

Secondly, good news can encourage constructive civic engagement and a stronger sense of community. While stories highlighting social problems are necessary, they should be accompanied by examples of progress and solution-driven efforts. Positive news not only informs but also empowers individuals to take action. For example, reports on successful environmental initiatives or local volunteer programs may motivate others to contribute in meaningful ways. In this sense, celebrating what goes right can be just as powerful as critiquing what goes wrong.

Admittedly, some argue that the media’s primary responsibility is to expose urgent problems, many of which are inherently negative. While this role is vital in holding institutions accountable, an overemphasis on negativity can distort reality and reduce public trust. A balanced news agenda, which includes both challenges and triumphs, would better reflect the complexity of real life and promote more informed, optimistic citizens.

In conclusion, I strongly believe the media should include more good news stories, as doing so can uplift public morale and inspire collective action. A more balanced approach to news reporting is not only desirable but necessary for societal well-being.
